Torren opted to stay with the Hounds for a while. He said the presence of so many really lightened the heavy feeling of sorrow and loss that hung in the air Below. Moose obtained permission for him to remain there while I worked to finish up my other tasks. He'd let me know when they had selected the other two Hounds that would serve as my guards. When I left, Torren was curling up on a shelf with several Hound puppies, who all seemed happy to pounce on him as they played. It was adorable. Selfishly though, I was relieved and maybe even a little jealous. Relaxing with tiny versions of Moose seemed like a perfect escape from the troubles we were dealing with. And I knew all the Hounds would protect Tor while he was within their territory. Nothing dangerous would get close to those pups and my friend was safely snuggled up in the middle of a pile of them. He was one person I didnât have to worry about for the moment.
As if my thoughts had conjured him, one of those I still worried about sought me out.
"How'd it go?" asked Cal, as he found me on the walk back to my father's main chambers.
"They agreed. The Hounds will fight beside Angus and three of them will escort me on the way to find Newt."
A muscle in his jaw relaxed at the news. "I'm guessing Moose is one of those going with you."
"Of course. I'm pretty sure that even if they'd chosen not to help us, he'd have found a way to be beside me when I left. He's just that way."
"Where's Tor?" Cal glanced around, as if the shadows were hiding our friend. "I've been worried about him."
"He's staying with the Hounds for now. Playing with their puppies. Seems to help ease some of the strain of being here."
"Really, Hound puppies?" Cal sounded astonished and even a little wistful. "I've never seen one of their pups. Lucky guy."
I thought of how Torren had looked as the puppies had climbed on him, practicing their little growls and snarls, swiping at each other with their oversized paws. "It was pretty cute. Maybe he'll tell you about it. Even introduce you to them if you're nice," I teased, elbowing him in the ribs with a grin.
We laughed together, the sound echoing off the high stone ceiling as we walked. But Cal's mood turned serious almost immediately as he put his hand on my arm, slowing my steps.
"Laney, I want to tell you about Danila." His brows were drawn in and his jaw had gone tight once again.
"There's nothing you have to tell me, Cal. I saw the picture of the two of you. Back in your apartment. You both looked really happy."
"The picture?" He stumbled to a stop, his gaze far off as if he was thinking. "Wait, you saw that?"
"Yeah. When Torren and I were hiding out in your apartment. He was sleeping and I was looking at your bookshelves when I saw it.
